Academic and College Vocabulary.
Hello, my name is Rose Leclerc and I am currently in my second session in the Springboard to a DCS program at Cégep de Sherbrooke. I created this glossary to help students better understand key terms related to college studies and academic programs. Since the Springboard to a DCS program is not linked to a specific field of study, this glossary focuses on general academic and college-related vocabulary.
- assignment
- noun
- A task or piece of work assigned to someone as part of a job or course of study.
- Example: The completion of certain lessons may prompt an agent to visit the student and give an ASSIGNMENT that requires the completion of a program or some other activity.

- carpooling
- noun
- Taking part in a collective effort to reduce traffic during rush hour.
- Example: They are encouraged to take public transport, bike, walk, and CARPOOL to work.

- noun
- A series of lectures or lessons in a particular subject, typically leading to a qualification.
- Example: A business studies COURSE.

- noun
- The acknowledgment of a student's completion of a course or activity that counts toward a degree or diploma as maintained in a school's records.
- Example: In his first semester, he earned 17 CREDITS.

- The latest time or date by which something should be completed.
- Example: The DEADLINE for submissions is February 5th.

- An introductory, flexible, or hands-on program designed to help students or individuals investigate, "try out," and discover interests, skills, and potential career paths without immediate long-term commitment.

- adjective, noun
- An ongoing, low-stakes process used during instruction to monitor student learning, providing immediate, descriptive feedback to improve teaching and learning.
- Example: Quick quizzes and in-class polls are excellent tools for FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT.

- noun
- A mark indicating the quality of a student's work.
- Example: Teachers and administrators in many elementary schools have assumed that dividing the pupils in any GRADE into groups on the basis of test scores solves the problem of meeting the needs of individuals.

- The middle of a period of office, an academic term, or a pregnancy.
- Example: The answers to the eighth-grade geography MIDTERM are in her hands.

- The determination of the relative position of something or someone (especially oneself).
- Example: For her the idea of the working - class ORIENTATION was important, but in those months, as the student tide swept on, other priorities dominated.

- A flexible Quebec college pathway that allows students to register for CEGEP courses without being admitted to a specific program.
- Example: I am currently enrolled in the SPRINGBOARD to a DCS program at Cégep.

- A high-stakes evaluation conducted at the end of an instructional unit, course, or program to measure student learning against predefined benchmarks.
- Example: While SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS are primarily evaluative, they also offer valuable feedback to students on their overall performance.
